My Top 5 Favorite Nail Polishes
Continuing the trend of April Fools post being an off topic post, this year nail polish!
I had some ideas for an April Fools joke post this year, but I wasn’t as confident in those ideas and probably was overthinking haha. Plus, this was like a whole month in the making even though I changed up my idea for this post. So yeah, nail polish. Even though I tell myself I should post my nails more online, and then proceed to not do that, I guess it could be a surprise that I regularly paint my nails every week. And I got a little bit (*cough*morelikealotabit*cough*) obsessed and I have a lot of polish. Like a lot. Like enough to last me multiple lifetimes. I am more selective nowadays to what I buy, in comparison to the past where I bought every release drop from the brand that introduced me to buying nail polish online, but I am eyeing two polishes that caught my eye and I believe I don’t have something similar in my collection. Anyway, yeah, I decided for this year’s April Fools day I would talk about nail polish. My original plan was to pit two polishes with similar polishes against each other and pick which one I like, but then the first match was too hard to pick so I ditched that. Then I was going to just let a random picker pick two polishes to compare, but I just wasn’t really feeling it (plus it would have one week doubled up so I could catch up). And then, finally, I just settled on mentioning the polishes I like the most.
My Top 5 nail polishes in my collection in particular. And this time, I am listing them in the order I do put them in. I think it goes without saying that I find all of these very pretty (both in bottle and on the finger) and it applies smoothly. Oh, and these are all nail polishes I bought myself. I am not sponsored by any of these brands and this is my genuine thoughts. Half of these polishes are also sadly not available anymore, due to being limited editions, and I’ll mark them as such. So, let’s get into it!
1. Witch Hazel/Mermaid Baid
Mooncat
MERMAID BAIT is a turquoise lacquer filled with our XTRA shifty, super chromey shimmer that shifts dramatically from pink-to-gold-to-lime green, giving this shade a baby blue appearance in the sun and a greener appearance in the shade.
WITCH HAZEL is a peach yellow shimmer lacquer that color-shifts between shades of peachy-pink, yellow, and green.
These two polishes that I honestly couldn’t decide which one I liked the most. I love both Witch Hazel and Mermaid Baid so much equally and I thought it would only be right to have these tied. Mermaid Bait is one of the polishes I got in my second order from Mooncat (my first order was such a disappointment) and Witch Hazel is one from my most recent order that I made for my birthday. Mermaid Bait has been my number one since I got it and I was eyeing Witch Hazel since it dropped as it looked very pretty and I always wanted another polish in the same formula as Mermaid Bait but I was a bit hesitant as I don’t like seeing my nail line and it looked sheer based on swatch photos and videos I was seeing. Well, I finally got it for my birthday and I fell in love with Witch Hazel so fast. It wasn’t as sheer as I was fearing and it was even prettier than I thought. I saw someone describe Witch Hazel as a liquid drop of sun and it definitely is.
So, why did I put Mermaid Bait and Witch Hazel tied for first place? Well, I do feel these two polishes are on the same level and even two sides of the same coin. Mermaid Baid is the sea and Witch Hazel is the sun. Which one you wear over the other is just based on which one you’re in the mood for (or you can just wear both haha).
2. House of Hades
Mooncat
HOUSE OF HADES is a deep blue-purple lacquer packed with cobalt ULTRA-fine flakies.
I have heard people raving about House of Hades ever since it first dropped, as well as people saying that it’s overrated. I was hesitant on getting this polish based on the complaints people had on this polish, but man does it look pretty. Well, I couldn’t resist anymore, picked it up for my birthday, and hoped I didn’t get a bad batch. And, well, I think I got a relatively good bottle! I didn’t have to worry about the worries I had and I’m pretty happy with it. Though, sometimes, I do get the odd finger where it ends up being pretty patchy.
3. Heart of a Dying Star
Night Owl Lacquer | LE
A clear base filled with red reflective glitter pigment, black metallic flakes and indigo/violet/red shifting crystal chameleon flakes. Inspired by collapsing stars.
I avoided reflective glitter polishes for a long time due to my first experience with it. I just thought it wasn’t really worth it and you couldn’t really see the effect even with the flash on. Well, it turns out it was just how the brand that introduced me to reflective glitter only put a sprinkle in their polishes as it turns out I absolutely love it if a polish is jam packed with it. Despite it being a reflective glitter polish, I thought Heart of a Dying Star was too pretty to pass up and that was the best decision I could have made. Cause this polish is so pretty and the reflective glitter is so responsive it looks like it’s glowing in the bottle when I have the light on. I love how it looks purple in normal lighting and then BA-BAM it’s red when you shine a light on it. Not to mention the black flakies and the shimmer really brings it all together. My only complaint is that I don’t like the round brush and that I have no idea what I’m going to do when I finish the bottle.
4. Glampire 2.0
Sassy Sauce | LE
A violet jelly packed with red/copper/golden shifting shimmer, black/red shifting multichrome flakes and red glitter flakes.
Glampire a polish that got hyped up a lot and I was pretty sad that I couldn’t buy it. This does have two sister polishes, a version without the flakies (Cock-A-Doodle-Doom) and a magnetic version (Fierce Mojo), and I was so close to buying Cock-A-Doodle-Doom until it was announced that a 2.0 version of Glampire was being made. And of course I had to snatch up my own bottle. It was definitely worth the hype and I’m so glad I was able to pick it up.
5. Sunset Bliss
Chamaeleon Nails | LE
A thermal going from mulberry (cold) to aqua (warm) with hues of magenta and blue while transitioning. Filled with orange/pink iridescent flakes as well as black flakies. Inspired by the magic and feelings we have when enjoying the wonders of a sunset.
Last, but not least, is Sunset Bliss. I wanted to put at least one thermal polish here as I love thermal polishes and after careful consideration I picked Sunset Bliss. While I think the warm state is the rare color that doesn’t look that good on my skin tone, the longer I look at it the longer it grew on me. It also won over my other thermals as I just really love how Chamaeleon Nails’ formula and I especially love when I get a big iridescent flake on a nail. The iridescent flakes and the black flakies also work well in both warm and cold states and even brings out a different side of them depending on if it’s mulberry or aqua. I also have another polish from them, but it didn’t quite make it as the warm state is more sheer than I expected it to be so it got some points knocked off. Chamaeleon Nails have a really good formula and absolutely nails their limited edition polishes.
Honorable Mentions: Artemis’ Deathkiss (Mooncat), Sugar Spun (Crystal Knockout), Phantom Shoreline (Chamaeleon Nails), Panda-monium (Monarch), Heart of Stone (Mooncat), Green Eyed Monster (Mooncat), Milky Stars (Dany Vianna), Maelstrom (Mooncat), Grandpa’s Garden (Envy Lacquer), Sea Witch (LLP), Carrie (ILNP)
Well, those are my Top 5 nail polishes with a…pretty long honorable mention list. Now all that’s left is to look at the picture I took of my own nails wearing these polishes in a skittle mani! I wish I knew how others take pictures of their nails cause trust me, they look way better in person and I was not able to capture the depth of the polishes.
